Year 2 Experience Life as Victorian Servants
To tie in with their topic about Victorians, the Year 2 children went back in time to become Victorian servants to the Earl and Countess of Devon at Powderham Castle!
They met Mrs Croomb the housekeeper, who informed them of their duties for the day, and then introduced the children to Mrs Copp the cook, who taught them all about working in the Victorian kitchen.
Dressed in appropriate clothes, the children learned how to dust the ornate wooden panelling in the castle’s dining room and they also beat the carpets with wooden beaters and polished the tables. Ironing the linen, scrubbing the floors and polishing the boots were all part of the daily routine as well.
Mrs Copp then taught them how to roll and cut pastry and they learned about Victorian kitchen implements.
Before leaving, and travelling back into the 21st century, the children were able to try out the Welsh cakes they made. Despite the somewhat ‘traditional’ kitchen implements, these were tasty cakes indeed!
