Pupils Shine in Production of Honk!
The classic tale of the ugly duckling came to life last week as Year 8 pupils presented their end-of-year production to the school.
Since it first hatched in 1993, Stiles & Drewe’s 1993 musical has winged its way around the world in over 8000 productions. The heart-warming story, complete with sparkling wit and a memorable score, proved the perfect pre-Christmas treat.
The delightful adaptation follows the story of Ugly, a cygnet who is mistaken as an ugly duckling after falling into his mother’s nest. Teased by both his siblings and several barnyard animals, Ugly sets out on an adventure of self-discovery. On his journey, he meets a whole flock of colourful characters, including a sly tomcat and elegant swan.
Upon receiving their parts for the play, Year 8 pupils Florence Delafield-Cook and Freya Schmidt said: “When we heard who we would be playing we got very excited and started learning our lines straight away. In rehearsals, the vibe was excitable and we were all really enthusiastic!”
They added: “We loved the play so much that even after the last performance everyone was still singing the songs!”
Head of Drama, Lisa Kierle, said: “Honk! is a popular, family-friendly show and was therefore the ideal platform for our young actors to showcase their singing, acting and dancing talent. With its bouncing score and universal story, the play captured the hearts of all who attended.”
She added: “Every child wanted to make this show a success. Not only were there the important ensembles of ducklings, farmyard animals, geese and frogs, but also many solos and duets. Whether large or small, all of the children should be proud of their roles.”
“Once again, I would like to thank the costume ladies and backstage crew who worked tirelessly to create interesting props and costumes. We continue to aim high here at King’s Hall and I hope that our production of Honk! Was memorable for everyone. It certainly was for us!”
