Pupils Get Creative for World Book Day

World Book Day is always a very special occasion at King’s Hall. We are a school that fully embraces the joys of reading and we enjoy celebrating this annual event in our own, unique way.

This year, pupils from Years 3 to 7 were challenged to create a mood board to represent one of their favourite stories and, as ever, the results are jaw-droppingly impressive, as anyone who has passed through Reception in the past week or so will know.

Our magnificent team of Year 6 Reading Ambassadors also did a wonderful job of making World Book Day an event to remember. They delivered some special goodies to our pupils, together with tokens which they are able to trade for books at local shops throughout March.

Our visiting judge for the Mood Board Challenge was Mrs Josephine Barclay, our librarian at King’s College, who had the unenviable task of selecting the winning entries from a sea of fabulously imaginative boards. It was certainly not an easy job! The results of the challenge were announced in this morning’s assembly, with all six winners, Mabel, Adam, Jude, Jago, Kendra and Eve, receiving a small prize (even Snoops, our school dog, was commended for his Harry the Dirty Dog board!).

Staff and pupils in Pre-Prep had an equally wonderful time. Previously in the term, those in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 had been asked to decide the events for the day as part of their Pupil Voice project. After lots of discussion, representatives attended an important meeting with Head of Pre-Prep, Claire Luckhurst, where the ideas were shared and the decisions made.

For 2019, it was decided that the department would host a ‘Big Bedtime Story’ and run a ‘Write Your Own Book’ competition. On March 7th, clutching their cuddliest toys and dressed in their warmest pyjamas, the children arrived ready for a day of immersive storytelling.

Commenting on the day, Claire said: “As ever, the brilliant Pre-Prep staff embraced the children’s enthusiasm and energy, creating a cosy ‘nest’ in the Arts Centre for the bedtime story. The hot chocolate, marshmallows, and cookies went down a treat.”

The winners of the competition were also announced in this morning’s assembly, with the successful nine awarded a certificate and special storybook. Congratulations Carmen, Charlie, Henry, Theo, Zac, Sam, Danning, Isla and Xavier.
