Year 7 pupil Maisie Everett enjoyed some fantastic fencing successes over the Christmas period. Just before we broke up in December she first won the U11 Epee silver medal in the Leon Paul Junior Series (LPJS) that took place in Glamorgan. During the event Maisie also competed up an age group and was delighted to win the U13 Epee bronze as well! This ended her U11 LPJS competition year achieving a brilliant National ranking of 4.

In 2018, Maisie will be competing in the U13 group for LPJS competitions. She will be hoping to accrue official British Fencing GB ranking points, aspiring to gain GB Squad selection, for events being held in Poland and Paris.

Maisie will also be entering national competitions at a higher level. The Elite Epee Serieswill be a real challenge. Last weekend, in the first of seven competitions she won silver amid some high calibre opponents. Maisie beat the UK's current age group no.1 seed in the semi-final (turning a few heads) to earn a place in the final. Although Maisie lost out 10-8 to another GB squad fencer, she put up a great fight. We wish her luck representing King's Hall in the National Series competitions ahead.

Another of our stars, Year 6 pupil Maya Penn, is also well placed near the top of the national rankings. Time spent on quality training and specific competitions, which build fight experience, are the priority for Maya this year as she prepares for the U13 series in a years’ time.

The King’s Hall Foil Fencing Club runs on Mondays and on Wednesdays for Sabre. Fencing is a great sport for lots of reasons: overall fitness, balance, core strength and hand/eye coordination, requiring skills of speed, agility, mental discipline, tenacity, determination and focus. There’s a reason they call it liquid chess! It’s also a sport based on great sportsmanship and etiquette. Why not give it a go!
