Annie Makes Headlines with the Virtual Youth Orchestra
Talented musicians across the globe have joined forces ‘virtually’ to bring music-lovers a treat amid the COVID19 pandemic. One of those musicians is our very own Annie D-J, a Year 5 pupil with a penchant for the performing arts.
Showcase Music School are a Southampton-based group, comprising the Showcase Young Voices, Drumming Academy and Troop, Philharmonic Orchestra, Jazz Orchestra, and newly-established Virtual Youth Orchestra. Open to musicians aged 18 and under, the group’s aim is to spread awareness of how music can benefit the wellbeing of young people, especially during difficult times such as these.
Over the past month, members of the Youth Orchestra have mesmerised audiences with their orchestral renditions of popular songs such as Tones and I’s Dance Monkey and Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir, as well as some of Hollywood’s most iconic movie scores. The group also made headlines with their unique version of the Sky Sports News theme.
The opportunity came about through Annie’s dad and our very own Director of Music, Mr Dayus-Jones:
“We found out about the group through their Facebook page, and after hearing their rendition of the Avengers theme, thought it would be fun to join. I did some research and found out that it was open to anyone, from all over the world, who wanted to take part.”
After finding out that their next song was a medley from The Greatest Showman, Annie was sold. Despite feeling a bit nervous at first, it wasn’t long before she found her feet. In fact, she is now preparing for her next project, Rachel Platten’s Fight Song. We can’t wait to see the finished result! If you would like to see some of their past renditions, please click here.
