Year 2 Summer Curriculum
Ready for Summer!
Welcome back to the final term in Year 2 and the Pre-Prep. It has been a great privilege to see your child progress through these very formative years, and we will all be working hard to end the year in style with the Summer Show and Sports Day, as well as the Year 2 Big Sleepover.
Our topics for the term are ‘Kenya’ and ‘Habitats’. These topics will cover elements of geography, science, computing and design technology, and will involve a variety of activities, including an exciting visit to Longleat, where the children will visit the Kenyan village and go on an African safari.
After half-term we have planned two short discrete topics; ‘King Arthur’ (including a visit to Glastonbury) and ‘Electricity’. If you have any books or interesting items at home linked to these topic areas, please feel free to bring them in to share with the class. We also welcome any extra ‘research’ the children do and will readily share these achievements with the class.
In English the children will continue to consolidate their knowledge and use of phonics, spellings and basic punctuation. Lessons will be based around the tale Meerkat Mail and will focus on letter writing. After half term the children will be looking at non-fiction texts. 'Library Day' will remain on Wednesdays and gradually the children will be introduced to the Prep School library in readiness for Year 3.
In Mathematics the children will consolidate addition and subtraction facts, as well as multiplication and division facts. We will also be learning about money, time and measurement, initially through practical activities and then by problem solving and reasoning. We will be working hard to secure all Year 2 KIRFs and would appreciate your help to practice these at home on a regular basis.
On Wednesdays the children will develop football and cricket skills in Games with Mr Halls, and their Friday PE lessons will focus on athletics. It is important that your child has their full kit in school for both lessons, as well as on any days where they participate in a sports hobby.
We will endeavour to take the children swimming in any warm weather that presents itself. Please ensure that their swimming kit is in a separate swim bag together with a pair of flip flops or similar for them to walk to and from the pool. The girls require a swim hat and all children need to have a rash vest to protect them from the sun. All kit should be clearly named. We would also appreciate that swimming kit sent home to dry is returned the next day. Please let us know if your child requires any swimming aids.
French with Madame Harvey and music with Mr Dayus-Jones will take place every Friday morning, and Forest school will continue as normal on Thursday mornings. As a part of the transition to the Prep School, the children will join Year 3 for a few more playtimes, lunches and lessons, including games, outdoor learning, art, and DT.
Reading books will continue to be sent home every day bar Wednesday, and spellings will be sent home every day and tested on a Friday. We thank for your invaluable support with your child’s reading and homework.
