Welcome to the second term in Year 2!

This page aims to outline the main topics we intend to cover this term so that you are able to support and encourage your child with his/her learning. To help to ensure a smooth transition in to Year 2 for both and your child, it also contains details of the routines.

Topics this Term

Topics this Term

Our topic this term will be based around Keeping Healthy. This will include learning about how to keep our bodies healthy and finding out where our food comes from.

To support this we are planning to take the children to a local farm, a processing factory and to Tesco to fully understand the ‘farm to fork’ process.

If you have any books or interesting items at home linked to these topic areas please feel free to bring them in to share with the class. We also welcome any extra ‘research’ the children do and we will readily share these achievements with the class!

English

English

In English we will be covering a range of topics including poetry, non-fiction and narrative writing.

Alongside this the children will be developing their knowledge and understanding of basic grammar, punctuation and spelling.

We will also be sending home a copy of your child’s weekly spellings on Fridays.

Please encourage your child to practise these over the course of the week in preparation for a test on the following Friday.

Mathematics

Mathematics

In mathematics the children will continue to carry out both mental and written methods of addition and subtraction and will be introduced to multiplication and division. They will also be covering work on statistics and geometry.

It is very important that all children in Year Two learn the key instant recall facts (KIRFs) which form the basis of your child’s mathematics homework; these can be found at the back of your child’s reading record book.

Please continue to practise these number facts regularly at home with your child. As part of our learning outside the classroom we will be visiting ‘We the Curious’ to take part in the ‘Math's Mission’ day. Further details to follow.

PE and Games

PE and Games

Games lessons will take place on Wednesdays with Mr Halls (Director of Sport) and PE lessons on Fridays. It is essential that the correct kit is in school for these lessons and that it is all clearly named. Please note that football socks and boots are only required if your child is participating in the multi-sports sessions which are run as part of the Hobbies programme. Mr Halls has requested your child has a gum shield and a pair of shin pads in school as the children will be developing their hockey skills this term.

Music

Music

Music with Mr Dayus-Jones and French with Madame Harvey will take place on Friday mornings, whilst Forest School will be every Thursday morning.

Homework

Homework

The Homework programme is similar to Year One. Reading books will continue to be sent home every day (except Wednesdays) and Maths will also be sent on Fridays. The children will be learning spellings throughout the week at school and spelling patterns will be sent home with reading records for daily practice, ready for a very informal test on Friday. The children will also be able to choose a book from the Pre-Prep Library to enjoy and share at home.
