Year 2 Discover the Art of Dairy Farming
As part of their ‘Healthy Living’ topic, pupils in Year 2 enjoyed a visit to a local dairy farm, where they learnt all about the industry. The budding farmers were due to visit earlier in the Lent term, but because of the snowy weather had to postpone.
Nestled in rural Devon, the farm was the perfect place for the children to gain a real hands-on experience. Following a tractor ride, the pupils enjoyed some quality time with the calves and enjoyed watching as the farmworkers went about their work.
The children were especially eager to find out where milk comes from, and how it is then processed and transported to their favourite supermarkets.
To get a real feel for the journey, the pupils then travelled to the Müller plant in Bridgwater, where they were given a guided tour of the factory and, thanks to the friendly operatives, discovered how milk is processed and packaged, ready for distribution.
To round off the trip, the group visited their local supermarket to pick up the final product – a pint of milk! The drink provided a refreshing end to the day, despite there being a lack of cookies!
