A Walk on the Wild Side
Pupils in Year 2 went wild last week after finding out that they would be visiting Longleat Safari Park as part of their topic on Kenya.
The children, who have been reading and studying Emily Gravett’s Meerkat Mail, were excited to meet some of their favourite literary animals – Sunny the Meerkat included! To tie in with their studies, the lucky bunch were treated to a safari ride, where they got up close and personal with giraffes, rhinos, leopards and lions. The real highlight, though, was Annie the Elephant – a rare and magical sight (or so we are told!).
Next, the children hopped aboard Longleat’s safari boat, the Lady Bath, for a closer look at the hippos, sea lions and gorillas. There was even the opportunity to see some colobus monkeys, a species native to Kenya.
Inspired by their exotic expedition, Year 2 thought it would be nice to share their adventures with the younger children. Therefore, in their next art lesson, they painted two boxes for Nursery 1 and 2, illustrating them with Kenyan animals, mud huts and trees. They went down a treat with the pupils, who spent the rest of the weekly climbing in and out of them.
