Speech and Drama

For those pupils wishing to go beyond the curriculum we offer Speech and Drama lessons as an optional extra. The children taking these lessons have the opportunity to prepare for examinations and to showcase their work to parents and friends in Speech and Drama Concerts in the Arts Centre.

Speech and Drama is a subject which can benefit children of all abilities, developing self-confidence, self-discipline and creativity. It can extend the most able, as well as offering less academic children an opportunity to excel.

Speech and Drama supports the English school curriculum and children learn to talk intellectually about their chosen pieces. Children have the opportunity to create and develop their own ideas through discussion, mime, role play, directing and games and can work towards Examinations.

Children can choose from a selection of exams depending on their age including Spoken English, Verse and Prose, Reading for Performance, Acting, Devised Performance and Mime. Taking an exam allows them to perform their chosen pieces and to answer questions verbally, demonstrating their understanding of the text and theory, in front of an examiner.
