PSHE

King's Hall School is a member of a group of Woodard Schools and as such it has a set of values that underpin the workings of the school at every level. These values are academic, sport, health, emotional, spiritual and moral.  Within this framework the PSHE programme reflects and supports all areas of the curriculum, with specific lessons focusing on emotional, moral and to some extent the spiritual development of the child.

The PSHE programme throughout the school is being evolved to be more relevant to the specific age of the child and involve aspects of current Government policies such as the Healthy Schools programme and Every Child Matters. The school is currently promoting awareness of cyber-bullying, and pupils are learning about the correct use of new technology.

As PSHE is provided within the tutor group, the children are conditioned to trust their peers and staff as they progress through the school. In the tutor group staff encourage a friendly atmosphere based on trust in which to discuss all matters arising from the academic and sports curriculum, and also those arising from personal everyday interactions around the school. The children write their own rules on how the PSHE discussions will be conducted in the talking part of the lesson; a talking stone is often selected, the children having done circle time lower down the school. The children are made aware of each term's PSHE programme in advance, and different methods of presentation are used to involve all the children as much as possible.

Issues arising such as bullying, bereavement or changes of family circumstances, which could be very personal for a child, are discussed firstly with that particular child. The child has the option of attending a group session or not. The school is currently looking at a new approach to teaching Sex and Relationship education and Drugs Awareness to Year 8 in readiness for their move to senior school.
