King’s Hall Pelican Nursery is the first step of a child’s learning journey at King’s Hall and the first rung of the Pre-Prep ladder. The curriculum is tailored to meet the developmental needs of each individual child following the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. Our prime aim is to instil a love of learning into every child whatever their starting points or capabilities by making the very most of their natural curiosity. A Nursery education is very much about what we can ‘bring out’ of a child rather than what we can ‘put in’. This is achieved through our highly qualified staff making the most of our stunning setting and excellent facilities.

We have two rooms, known as Pelican Nursery Room 1, which welcomes children from the age of 2, and Pelican Nursery Room 2.
Pelican Nursery Room 2 welcomes children from the age of 3 and where they stay until they make the transition to their Reception year. It is positioned next to our Reception classrooms with whom we share a secure, purpose-built outside area. The ratio for this age group is 1:8 but is often less than this due to the flexibility of our Early Years staff.
Whether your child starts at age 2 or 3, they will be assigned a Key Person who will work in close partnership with you to ensure they feel happy and safe and that all of their needs are being met. We believe forming good links between home and school are paramount to success and recognise parents as their child’s primary educators. We invite parents in on a formal basis once a term to discuss their child’s Learning Diary but also place high value on the daily dialogue to celebrate achievements and pass on relevant information.
Most of the activities take place within the busy and lively Nursery environment, with free-flow access to the outside area. However, there are also daily trips to the adjoining woodland area to tend to the rabbit, guinea pigs and collect eggs from the ever-growing brood of hens. This is also the setting for the wonders of Forest School, which has dedicated sessions as well as impulsive ones!
We share all the facilities the school has to offer such as the Sports Hall, Theatre, Log cabin ICT suite, and make full use of the Wildlife Hide and extensive grounds for welly walks and nature studies.
We also take the children to Vivary Park and Taunton Library on alternate weeks and set off on bigger adventures every term to places such as Court Farm and the theatre.
We offer the following session choices and insist on a minimum of two sessions per week:
Morning (including lunch): 8.00am – 1.00pm
All day: 8.00am – 6.00pm*
*Children may be collected from 3.30pm
Moving Onto Reception – Continuing the Learning Journey
All children who attend our Nursery are expected to carry on their learning journey at King’s Hall by moving onto Reception in the September term following their fourth birthday. You will be invited to a Welcome Afternoon in the summer term where you will be informed of what to expect as your child ‘starts school’ and how we can support you and you can support your child. Your child will also be invited to spend several sessions in their new classrooms during the summer term to start to get to know their teachers, the routine and to become familiar with the environment. The joy of this, of course, is that most of what we refer to as ‘new’ is already very familiar due to the close links between Nursery and Reception. The transition is, therefore often very smooth as the security of all that is familiar gives our children the means to embrace the new with confidence.
