Fencing – South West Regional Qualifiers 2017
Our fencers are progressing brilliantly as fencing at local clubs allows them the opportunity to train twice a week. The results are starting to show for themselves!
In the U12 girl’sfoil, both Maya Penn and Maisie Everett started strong with Maisie winning 4 out of 7 fights and Maya being seeded 2nd. In a nail-biting next round fight for Maisie against someone she has beaten before - she fought back from 9-3 down to 9-9 and then lost 10-9 in the last 10 seconds! Maya was fencing up an age group and performed brilliantly to finish in the silver medal position - well done both the girls and good luck in the British Youth Championships.
After only picking up an epee 4 times, Maisie was keen to enter the U12 Epee Competition as well and despite being the youngest in the age group surpassed all expectations as she not only won ALL 10 fights in her first round, she also came home with a bronze medal, qualifying her for the British Youth Championships in epee as well. What an extraordinary result - well done Maisie!
Joshua Duckham had an excellent day as well and fenced his 'best yet' - a comment from one of the local club coaches! Whilst he does not quite have the experience yet to qualify, this was a great performance and positions him well for next year.
Our only sabre, Ollie Bell, showed great grit entering this competition when he has struggled to get back from matches in time for Wednesday training this term. His footwork is really promising and he is starting to show a good understanding of the rules and timing of sabre fencing, this will stand him in good stead as he progresses. Well done Ollie - let's hope you can get to training!
