Beyond the Library this week: Years 3 and 4 meet author and illustrator, Chris Riddell
On Wednesday morning, fizzing with excitement despite the early departure, Year 3 and Year 4 travelled to Hazlegrove School to meet leading children’s author and illustrator, Chris Riddell. Chris has just finished his term as the UK Children’s Laureate and his books are well loved here at King’s Hall, with ‘Ottoline and the Yellow Cat’ being read by Year 3 within the English curriculum.
Chris had been delayed a little, so we began the session with an impromptu sing-a-long which warmed everybody up. It turned out that Chris had arrived at the wrong school that morning by mistake (the children thought this was highly amusing) and he was somewhat concerned that his late arrival might see him summoned to the Headmaster’s office (which they found even more amusing!)
As soon as Chris sat down at the desk at the front of the hall, he began to draw as he spoke, and we were instantly mesmerised. Before our very eyes he sketched some truly marvellous pictures: a fish on a bicycle, Mr Monroe from the Ottoline series, a gruesome zombie and even some of the children in the audience! It was great to hear a reading from Chris’s new book ‘Goth Girl and the Sinister Symphony’ which looks like it will be a huge hit with our readers.
Well done to Daisy who was invited up to the stage to draw with Chris. She is now the proud owner of a Chris Riddell original sketch!
Finally, pupils had the opportunity to have their books signed by Chris and there were huge smiles all round as each child got to meet him. What a wonderful morning we had!
