Our very own 'Great Fire of London'!

30/09/2011
After spending some time learning about the Great Fire of London in 1666, the Year 2 children decided to build - and then burn(!) - their very own London from the 17th century!
They made houses and churches from cereal boxes, covered and decorated to look like contemporary buildings, and surrounded them with straw to ensure a good blaze!
They tried to build their London with the same problems that were faced back then – the houses were close together and made of very flammable materials. They made it very windy by flapping cardboard and the boxes and straw were very dry.
The houses went up a treat!
They had built in a fire break that did stop the flames and they tried putting the fire out using a syringe to represent the ‘squirts’ that were used to put out the real fire. They were not very effective!
This was a very effective and real way of bringing history to life for our younger children. They were motivated and interested in all that we were doing.
