Celebrating and Remembering

Published on: Monday, November 12, 2018

Last week was definitely a week of mixed emotions as we celebrated the excitement of fireworks and stood in respectful silence as we remembered those who have lost their lives in wars.

The children enjoyed traveling back in time 400 years to learn about the story of Guy Fawkes which we linked to our Fundamental British Values. As the children are now so familiar with our values characters it really supported their understanding of the discussion of the story. Was King James tolerant? Guy Fawkes demonstrated individual liberty when plotting his secret plan with his co-conspirators but did he follow the rule of law? Although big words and big questions for such young minds they showed they were fully able to answer and understand.

At the end of the week we held a special assembly in which we thought about the importance of wearing a poppy, not only to remember those who have died in wars but also the families who have lost family members and those who continue to fight today. This was followed later in the morning by a special Remembrance service where our Pre-Prep Ambassador read a short reading and the eldest child in Year 2 hung a poppy wreath with the youngest child in Reception. We then listened to The Last Post and observed a minute’s silence.

Both of these events elicit very different feelings and emotions from the children and I am always in awe of how they instinctively respect the solemnity of Remembrance. Pre-Prep staff never cease to be amazed at the children’s conduct, especially during the minute’s silence, despite being so very young.
