Forest School

Forest School takes place on site in our own woods: it enhances, supplements and extends the learning that happens the rest of the week in our classrooms – as our Forest School Co-ordinator says,’ It is a classroom without walls. It is a very different way to learn and is not only fun but helps to build children’s self-esteem, confidence in their abilities, teamwork, knowledge and skills.’ We have found that those children who may find schoolwork daunting can really come alive and begin to thrive in the Forest School environment.

No matter what the weather the children spend the day outside. They build dens, learn to use tools safely, use natural sustainable materials to complete projects and generally get exceptionally muddy! The children even learn to cook using our child-built cob oven. The highlight of the day, though, is not the fantastic activities, the model-making or the bug hunts, but is undoubtedly the melting marshmallows, sizzling sausages and hot chocolate, all cooked over an open fire by our outdoor classrooms.
