Drama

All children at King’s Hall have Drama lessons as an exciting part of their working week.

At King's Hall the teaching of drama balances three important strands:

  • Drama is used as a vehicle for active learning of key life-skills including concentration, teamwork, co-operation, listening, negotiating, problem solving, communicating confidently, expressively and effectively, reflecting and evaluating.
  • Drama is also used to explore issues, to develop a sense of morality and values, to develop the imagination and, on occasions, to support learning in other subject areas although this is not a primary function of the syllabus, which is essentially free-standing.
  • Drama lessons, in addition to exploring a theme or developing content, foreground theatre skills, techniques, forms and conventions, allow students to build up a detailed experience and understanding of the above in a way that prepares pupils for a key stage 4 GCSE drama course available at many schools including King’s College, Taunton.  The emphasis, however, is not on producing one or two star pupils or professional actors of the future, but rather on encouraging all students to become more skilled in their use of and knowledge of the art form. Indeed, developing performance skills is only one aspect of the work in the drama syllabus, fascinating though this may be; producing confident and thoughtful children who use drama to help them understand and develop themselves is considered of even greater importance.

In addition to the opportunities created as part of class Drama, children are encouraged to take part in our hugely popular Year Group productions.
