Design Technology

In Design Technology pupils are encouraged to respond creatively to a given brief and have the opportunity to develop ideas by experimentation while at the same time gaining practical skills which will be useful later on in their studies. This starts in Year 3, where short projects are the order of the day to promote interest and basic skills, and then progresses through the years until in Year 8 they are investigating more complex mechanisms and considering the industrial and commercial aspects of the designs.

The pupils work on a variety of projects during their time at King’s Hall, which range from Second World War toys, bridge structures, propulsion methods, electrical circuits and cam with crank mechanisms involved in the combustion engine. The pupils are encouraged to be independent in their approach and work either on their own or in pairs, but at all times they are stimulated to exchange ideas with one another.  From the start in Year 3 they keep a record of their progress which includes diagrams and plans of their design along with self-evaluation and teacher assessment.

Finally, when the pupils leave King’s Hall, they should have gained an interest in Technology which will help them in their future, along with the skills necessary to carry out tasks required for further study at senior school.
