Why Study Design Technology?

Why Study Design Technology?

From Year 3, pupils will develop a more sophisticated understanding of Design and Technology. The pupils have the opportunity to work in a specialist workshop with a wide range of materials (wood, plastic, textiles, card and electrical components) and equipment. The pupils will receive instruction on how to use tools safely and confidently, undertaking a broad and exciting curriculum which introduces them to designing and making in a fun and stimulating way.

We encourage pupils to develop their creativity and imagination from an early age and teach them the necessary practical skills and processes to solve design problems. Pupils of this age enjoy the freedom of being able to come up with their own designs and they are encouraged to develop their ideas and solve problems independently.

Pupils will record their design work in a design booklet and they are able to take home what they have made.

Examples of design and make tasks include:

Year 3: wooden photo frame, chocolate packaging, moving mechanisms, textile sunglasses case

Year 4: mini light key fob, wooden bookends, textile toy, electrical jitterbug

Year 5: bird mobile, steady hand game, textile bag dispenser, household organiser

Year 6: perpetual calendar, E-textiles monster apron, jewellery box

The department is often a hive of activity at lunchtime and after school as many pupils like to spend extra time perfecting their designs. There is also the opportunity to attend a DT club after school to enable those pupils who enjoy this subject to develop further their skills.
