Last week, the whole school were treated to a special Welsh-themed assembly as part of our St David’s Day celebrations. Leading this special service was King’s College Houseparents, Lisa Cashmore, Emma Edwards, and Laura Jones, all of whom are Welsh.

Born and raised in Mumbles, Swansea, Meynell Housemistress, Lisa, gave the children a fascinating insight into the Welsh language, teaching them words and phrases including “bore da” (“good morning”), and “diolch” (“thanks”), as well as the popular term “pop typing”, which translates to “microwave.”

Continuing with the Welsh theme, Carpenter Housemistress, Laura, who grew up in the Llanddewi Ystradenny community near Llandrindod Wells, spoke about traditional Welsh dress. To give the pupils an authentic experience, she enlisted the help of Year 3 and 4 pupils Connor and Hebe.

The two volunteers were dressed from head to toe in traditional costume while Laura told the story of Lady Llanover, a Welsh heiress famous for encouraging the Welsh to take pride in their cultural traditions. These included the eisteddfodau, a Welsh festival of music, literature and performance.

In the final section of the assembly, Taylor Housemistress and professional singer, Emma, introduced Wales as a land of song. The children enjoyed listening to the traditional Welsh hymn Calon Lan, which has become firmly established as a rugby anthem.Ruth Burke, a Third Form pupil at King’s College, joined Emma and played a delightful ditty on the harp.

To conclude the celebrations, everyone joined together for a special rendition of Cwm Rhondda, and of course, the Welsh National Anthem. For those who were keen to prolong the festivities, there was even opportunity to try some freshly baked Welsh cakes.

Commenting, Lisa, Emma, and Laura said: "We all had a fabulous time celebrating St David's Day. We were so impressed with the pupils' enthusiasm and interaction, and we are looking forward to visiting them again soon. We hope they enjoyed it as much as we did!"
