Side by Side Orchestra Day at Wells Cathedral School
Last week, 13 instrumentalists from Years 4 to 8 travelled to Wells Cathedral School to take part in a day of orchestral workshops, followed by a spectacular performance alongside pupils from Wells Cathedral, Leehurst Swan and Salisbury Cathedral School.
Rehearsals, both as the full orchestra of around 50 children, as well as smaller sectional groups, were led by inspirational tutors from Wells' outstanding music department. The children were also joined and coached by specialist music students from the senior school, many of whom are members of the superb and world-famous National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.
The piece chosen by the conductor, Paul Denegri, was completely unknown to all of the players. They therefore had to read and learn the whole piece from scratch in just one day, and the level of nuance and detail with which the piece was presented in the final performance was truly impressive.
Our pupils enjoyed the day enormously and were buzzing with excitement by the end of the performance. It is fair to say that the difference between the beginning of the first rehearsal and the end of the concert was staggering, and it was heartening to see how quickly the children from the different schools all integrated with each other in their shared love of music.
