Looking good! Our little chefs certainly looked the part at yesterday's Cookery School Opening. Read all about this… https://t.co/F9CBCsjznY - 5 hours ago

We are celebrating another fantastic year of results at the 2019 Taunton Drama Festival. For the fourth consecutive year, King’s Hall received the highest number of awards, with a total of 18 first, nine second and seven third placings.

The Taunton Festival of the Arts celebrated its 105th anniversary this year, with over 300 performers taking part in the Drama Festival alone. The annual event offers young performers the chance to compete in a range of disciplines, including music, dance and drama. Well into its second century, the competition continues to flourish, attracting applicants from across the South West and beyond.

Over the course of the festival, King’s Hall pupils from Years 1 to 8 notched up a number of awards, with two children receiving ‘outstanding’ marks in their selected class. This is a mark of over 90% and is only awarded for an “exceptional performance, both technically and artistically.”

Across the week only four performers were awarded the title, which makes Year 5 pupil Toby Burrell’s and Year 6 pupil Wilf Gostling’s wins all the more special.

Toby received his win in the ‘Year 5 and Under Solo Acting’ category, where he performed an extract as Chief Weasel from The Wind in the Willows. He also received The Hilda Chapman Award, which is presented to the person who performs the best piece of drama over the entire week.

Wilf also impressed the judges in the ‘Year 6 and Under Verse Speaking’ category with his rendition of Roald Dahl’s The Scorpion.

Commenting on the children’s success, speech and drama teacher Alastair Kirby said: “I am delighted to say that we were the most successful school taking part – this is an unbelievable achievement! All of our pupils have returned to school with a shiny new medal or cup – they should be extremely proud.”

He added: “I am so pleased with each and every one of our speech and drama pupils. They represented the school so well and it was lovely to see them gain recognition for their hard work, both inside and outside of school.”
