A Mighty Day Out for our Young Musicians
Just before half term, our Director of Music, Mr Dayus-Jones, took a group of instrumentalists to Wellington School to take part in a Prep Schools Mighty Orchestra.
Alongside pupils from Wellington, Exeter Cathedral School and Parkfield School, the total number of performers reached nearly 130 and there was barely room for the players let alone an audience!
Throughout the day, the musicians worked on four pieces: a full version of the Star Wars Main Title music, the famous opening movement of Orff’s Carmina Burana, a very tricky and thrilling arrangement of Mars from Holst’s The Planets and then, finally, the enormously popular In the Hall of the Mountain King by Grieg.
A morning of rehearsing in smaller groups with expert tutors and then as a whole group was followed by a swift lunch before more sectional rehearsals and a final run-through. At the end of the day a performance of the four pieces was put on for parents and guests; the atmosphere was absolutely electric and the quality of music-making was spectacular, especially given the difficulty of the music and the short rehearsal period.
Everyone who took part thoroughly enjoyed it and we are most grateful to Wellington School for arranging the day and hosting us. To view clips from the day, please click here.
